Frequently Asked Questions
I used to park in an open lot that has been fenced off. Where should I park now?If you had an assigned parking space and have not been contacted, call the parking office, and they will guide you through the process of finding a new space. Those without assigned parking spaces may park in other open lots or in campus parking structures. The parking office will be available to assist you with any parking-related issues. E-mail your questions to parking@caltech.edu or call 395-8877.
Will street connection between Del Mar Ave. and Holliston Ave. be closed at times during construction?
Arrangements will be made to keep the street traffic flowing during construction.
What are the alternate routes from Beckman Institute auditorium or the Broad Center to Chandler Dining Hall?
The southeast area of campus can be accessed by exiting through the north end of Beckman Institute, proceeding east towards the Beckman Auditorium parking lot, and then going southeast on the path leading to Baxter and Keck.
Alternatively, you could go south on Wilson Ave. and then east on San Pasqual Mall.
Will part of the Beckman Institute lawn be available during construction?
Most of the lawn area will be fenced off for construction staging, and the rest will be used to store trees that will be relocated from the construction sites.
How will the removal of open parking spaces for contractor parking in the California Blvd. parking structure affect the parking spaces available for the campus community?
All efforts are being made to minimize parking problems. We are coordinating with the parking office to ensure that there will be ample parking for the members of the campus community. Although it might be a longer walk than you are used to, the subterranean parking structure south of California Blvd. has ample available parking.
Won't the construction traffic on California Blvd. and Del Mar Ave. make getting in and out of Caltech more time consuming?
This concern is an important one, and we hope that Caltech and the surrounding community will be patient and understanding of that fact that short traffic delays are likely, but necessary in order for us to complete the projects as quickly as possible. To compensate for some traffic delays, please give yourselves ample time to get to and from work.
Why is the storm drain relocation necessary?
The proposed site of the new CCE building required the relocation of the storm drain.
Who decides on where the buildings are built?
Building committee chairs in the respective divisions, senior administration, and the buildings and grounds committee collaborate with Caltech's master planning firm to make these decisions.
If I have questions regarding construction, who should I contact?
E-mail all your questions to newbuildings@caltech.edu.
Will there be additional information updates as the construction progresses?
Yes, this website will be updated regularly, so keep checking for latest information.
What should I do if I see contractors taking all of the available parking in the morning?
Arrangements have been made to accommodate ample contractor parking for each of the projects. However, do keep in mind that anyone can park on public streets.
Will contractor vehicles be allowed to park in the Holliston Ave. parking structure?
The Holliston Ave. parking structure does accommodate some vendor parking. Arrangements will be made to ensure adequate contractor parking for each building project.
